Your major is in history and you´ve chosen to focus your paper in terms of a civil war. Well, the first important things to consider is whether you´re confident in your topic and how you´re going to go about writing it.
What is a civil war?
This is a war between two organizations of the same state/republic/country/ and past events document that they last for an average of four years. This is good news for you. The more information available the stronger and richer your paper will be. However, this is just a starting point. You should know how to write your particular paper.
Why write about the civil war?
- Your studies dictate it
Unfortunately for you this mean you have no choice but to write what you are given. This all depends on which level you are studying at. The higher the level, the more freedom you will have when it comes to your paper topic.

Of course this is good news. You have been given the choice and are therefore motivated to write it. Well, most of it anyway. However, you´re still thinking about what to include and what not to include.

- Provides the alleged reason(s) for why the particular war started.
- Gives a one line hypothesis that argues that the reason(s) are different to what has been alleged.
- A main body which:
- Tells the reader what happened in the war and why it allegedly started.
- Argues that there is more to it that what has been stated.
- Gives evidence to document a proposed hypothesis.
- A conclusion which:
- Summarizes your essay.
Do not include:
- Your personal opinion given as evidence. Personal opinion is not fact and should be made clear to the reader that you are not trying to portray it as such.

There have been many infamous wars of this kind which means you have an array of options regarding what kind of war(s) you will discuss:

Once you have chosen one of these topics you can look for research questions that surround it. The key here is to make sure the question is interesting and will first of all attract and then keep, the reader´s attention.
