Before writing your economics research paper
If you’re studying economics then you’re also studying science. Papers in this field can be very demanding and hence, time-consuming. You will have to look for a lot of advice and guidelines, depending on the organization you are writing for or with. Maybe it is part of your school paper or maybe it is part of a higher degree. It could even be research as part of your job. Whatever the reason for writing this paper, you will need a guide to follow.
Why write about economics?
- Your studies dictate it.
Obviously, this means it’s not your choice and you probably have to make do with a topic in economics that you’re not exactly au fait with. Don’t worry though, there is a lot of help out there.
- It’s a part of your degree that you find it interesting.
This is the lucky reason. You’re studying economics in the first place because it is a field that has always interested you, and you’ve chosen your economic research paper topic primarily because you’ve always had questions about it. This curiosity should help you in your research but of course there will be some stumbling blocks. Do your reading though, and you’ll be fine.
- It’s research as a part of your job.
This might mean you have decided to take it upon yourself to write about an area of economics that is important to your professional career. Maybe your boss has given you the task and is in charge of every step. Whatever the reason, you will need to ensure that your research is important and possibly groundbreaking in its topic.
Your economics research paper topics
The hardest part probably comes before you even put pen to paper, hand to keyboard: The research question itself. Before deciding on the topic you are going to spend hours painstakingly writing about, you need to get it right in your head.
Things you should do first:
- Research the areas you find interesting and see if there are any questions that you could advance on, or contradict.
- Make a shortlist of all the ones that interest you.
- Take your list to other people. People’s whose opinions are important to you should give you some motivation.
- Now you have a top two or three, do a little more in depth research. The specific topic that provides you with the most information and unanswered questions is the one.
Other things to consider before doing:
- Under no circumstance should you rush in and choose your topic without thinking. This is something that is going to keep you awake at nights, at least that’s what you need it to, so this means no boring questions!
- Research before doing is key. Don’t put off the research because you can’t be bothered.
- Don’t go off topic. Maybe you do a little research but decide to look at macroeconomics research paper topics, which can be another aspect, and your professor probably told you to think outside of the box.
- Always listen to your teacher’s/professor’s/employer’s instructions.
